The Leather Story

The story tale of Hide to Leather.

It’s important to take the hide of an animal within hours of an animal death because than hide starts decomposing. Also, it is very important that the hide must be carefully skinned and protected both in storage and transportation. In the first tanning, the hides are converted into leather through preserving the material and decomposition. To do this, hides are being loaded into a special tanning drum which contains a special tanning solution. A drum can contain two types of special tanning solutions either a vegetable tanning agent or chromium salt mix.

For producing flexible leather a vegetable mix is used which basically contains tannic extracts that are found in tree barks. Generally, this used for language and furniture. Chromium salt produces more flexible leather which can generally be used in making products like clothing or handbags. Hides treated in this solution will appear to be in pale blue color.  Also, a combination of these both kind of solutions can be used together which will eventually produce fuller-bodied leather that is both soft and supple. At the end of this process, special fats are added to the leather which helps to make leather stronger and softer this is also known as the liquoring process. However by applying high pressure to hides and bypassing them through rollers excess amount of water-soluble is removed. After these hides are being arranged by the level of quality, all those impaired with perfection being with high quality. The grade and level of leather will help out to determine the future use of leather. Retaining is done in order to achieve fully ready leather. This will again be the use of either vegetable mix or with a chromium salt mix or a combination. The excess moisture and water-soluble would be removed again by pressure and by passing through rollers. While retaining we can use bleaching agents this will provide us with an excellent base in order to operate the dyeing process. As soon as the tanning process is completed twice it is important to take hides for the drying process. Drying can be done in many ways either by Air-dried or vacuum dried. While air-drying we are supposed to put hides on something like an overhead conveyor till it is fully dried. Whereas vacuum drying is one of the quickest and easiest method. Although this method would cause the hide to shrink slightly but would end up in soft, smooth, fine, and tight texture. Leather again passed through another lengthy process which is the dyeing process it takes time because if this is not done perfectly it will give a patchy look to the leather.

We add wonderful colors into it from bold, bright to soft colors. The dyeing process is done under highly accurate computer programming because without it’s impossible to achieve consistent color each time. In the actual process, hides are being added into a large drum soaked into a chosen dye around 8 hours in order to ensure that the dye has fully saturated the hide. After this the leathers need to be rinsed thoroughly to remove residual dye or chemical. Once rinsed the hide needs to be fully dried. The last stage in the leather making is finishing. In this stage, it worked out to ensure that the leather is supple, flexible in nature which is the most desired thing in leather with the glossy finish. Basically a finish which is not only attractive or has a protective surface but also the one which is easier to clean. In a case where naked leather is required this stage would be skipped. To soften the leather a machine called a staker is used where the leather is both stretched and lots of natural oils will be added to lubricate the fabric. This stretching motion also tightens the pore structure of the leather. This helps create a higher quality finish that is desirable to consumers.

The final thing is to apply finishing spray over leather. Finishing spray is dependent on the desired leather for instance in the case where patent leather has required the coat of acrylic is added for it. Similarly, the mother of pearl can be added to give a pearlescent finish, and also at this stage leather can be embossed with patterns. After this leather would go through an ironing process that uses different degrees of pressure and heat until the desired shine is obtained. Finally, leather is taken for the quality check to ensure it has the correct color and all other minor details. From here leather can be rolled and shipped for any of multitude of products.
